Yoga

Somehow I think I would like it more if there weren’t any silly names for poses. I went to an office yoga class, it was weird. Not only was our office turned into a makeshift yoga studio, we did it with full fluorescent lights. Our teacher was pretty good, actually, although one would wonder why they would tell her class “I’m new at this…”. I really like the stretching/breathing aspect of it. What bothers me I suppose about the whole thing is she would talk to us about flow yoga and bending our legs this way and moving our body that way and breathing and then all of a sudden throw in a yoga word such as shananana. (Not a real word) And for some reason that breaks my concentration – like switching from English to any other foreign language – it’s jarring and makes me do a double take. Perhaps I wouldn’t have this problem if she did the whole thing in Hindu – or whatever language it actually is. (See I don’t really know… so maybe this whole yoga thing is beyond me)

I mean, I get that it’s a spiritual meditation thing and the Indian words are reflective of the poses and stuff, but for someone who has challenges clearing her mind and meditating without laughing at how she must look at this very moment… I really think adapting yoga classes to a North American/Westernized mindset may convert others (that is, people like me who would like to at least have a reason for purchasing Lululemon clothing not just because their pants are an automatic ass enhancer) to the cause.

At any rate, I seem to have signed up for a full set of yoga classes… so we’ll see if I change my mind about it. Maybe I’ll switch to Pilates after.
